"Actor's Watch" focuses on watches worn by actors in movies, television, etc.
This time, for the 54th installment, we will be introducing " Owen Wilson 's watch."

Speaking of Owen Wilson, in recent years he has become popular as the voice actor of the main character " Lightning McQueen " in Pixar's CG animation "Cars" (2006) and as " Mobius " in the Disney distribution drama "Loki" (2021), but my personal favorite is his combination with director Wes Anderson . This is no surprise, as Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson are old friends who met in college and co-wrote a screenplay for "Anthony's Motel" (2006), which was made into a movie.

This film marked Owen Wilson's commercial film debut as director, and movie fans are well aware that the pair have worked together on numerous other films since, including The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) and The Life Aquatic (2004). The pair is still going strong in Wes Anderson's latest film , The French Dispatch, which was released on January 28, 2022. Owen Wilson plays a reporter at the magazine editorial department where the story takes place.

So, this issue of "Actor's Watch" will focus exclusively on watches worn by Owen Wilson in films directed by Wes Anderson.

Anthony's Happy Motel

BOTTLE ROCKET (1996)

Anthony ( Luke Wilson ), who was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital, is invited by his former partner Dignan ( Owen Wilson ) to make a big hit with a robbery. However, every robbery plan that Dignan comes up with is absurd. Tired of the sloppy robbery plans, Anthony gets a decent job, but he can't refuse Dignan's aggressive invitation and ends up joining a new robbery plan...

This sloppy crime comedy was the debut film for director Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. It has a symmetrical screen composition and other Wes Anderson-esque elements that are characteristic of his recent works, but what's even more impressive is the fresh acting of the Wilson brothers, Owen and Luke, who have never acted in a film before.

In this movie, Owen Wilson wears a CASIO G-SHOCK DW-6600 . It is the same model worn by Bradley Cooper , who played the legendary sniper in "American Sniper" (2014). In recent realistic military movies, "watches that soldiers actually loved" are chosen to increase the realism of the battlefield, but of course this movie had no such intention, and it was probably the watch that Owen Wilson loved at the time. In fact, there are almost no photos of director Wes Anderson wearing a watch, and he seems to have little interest in watches. The actors often appear wearing their favorite watches. Owen Wilson is no exception.

The Life Aquatic

THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU (2004)

Steve Zissou ( Bill Murray ) is a marine documentary film director and ocean explorer. He hasn't had any hits recently, and he's been feeling down after losing a longtime colleague to a jaguar shark attack. Meanwhile, Steve meets Ned ( Owen Wilson ), a young man who is his ex-wife's son, and invites him to join them, and they begin tracking the jaguar shark that attacked his friend.

This pop and colorful adventure film depicts the later years of a marine film director who is thought to have been modeled after Jacques Cousteau . It's safe to say that this film established Wes Anderson's unique style, which continues to this day. The soundtrack, by Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO, a popular Hollywood soundtrack composer, brings a tranquil and nostalgic joy to the entire film.

The watch worn by Owen Wilson in this film is a Rolex GMT-Master II Ref. 16710 with a red and blue Pepsi bezel. It can be clearly seen in many scenes, such as when he checks the oxygen tank. This watch has also been seen in other films he has starred in, such as Wedding Crashers (2005) and Big Boys (2011), so it is likely one of his favorites.

Darjeeling Limited

THE DARJEELING LIMITED (2007)

After the death of their wealthy father, three brothers become estranged from each other. The eldest brother, Francis ( Owen Wilson ), calls on them to plan a trip to India to rekindle their bond. The three brothers, each with their own worries and conflicts, set off on a train journey on the Darjeeling Limited in India, carrying a large suitcase, but they run into trouble along the way. Will they be able to safely rekindle their bond as brothers ?

Continuing on from The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), this human drama follows on from director Wes Anderson's theme of "families trying to reunite". However, the stories are about "extremely special" families , such as a genius family or the sons of a wealthy man, so you won't feel like "That's so true!" or "I know what you mean!" (laughs). Enjoy the awkwardness of these families, whose gears don't mesh because of worries and friction that ordinary people don't understand.

In this movie, Owen Wilson plays Francis, the eldest of three brothers whose head is wrapped in bandages throughout the film. On his wrist, he wears a Rolex GMT-Master II Ref . 116710. This is his second GMT-Master II, following "The Life Aquatic." He has also been seen wearing this in interviews, so it is probably his favorite watch. After the casual Pepsi, he chose the bold black bezel , which shows his love for the GMT-Master II .

By the way, vintage Louis Vuitton trunks play a prominent role throughout this movie, and I won't tell you that every time I see the trunks piled up in front of Commit Ginza, I secretly think of this movie.

summary

What did you think?
Since I was limited to Wes Anderson's films, I was a bit nervous about what I would do if I couldn't find any material, but it turns out there is something if you look hard enough.

Director Wes Anderson is known for his strong attention to detail in all of his films, from screen composition and color to props, but what's interesting is that he seems to have little interest in watches and instead lets his actors wear whatever watches they want to wear.

In a scene that is calculated down to the last detail, Owen Wilson's natural acting creates a small "gap" to ease the tension, which is the tempo of Wes Anderson's films. Perhaps the fact that he doesn't seem to care about the prop of a watch is a "deliberate" choice to create a "gap" in the perfect imagery. If so, Owen Wilson, who always appears wearing his favorite watch, can be said to have made a significant contribution to the film in terms of props as well.

Actually, I haven't seen the latest film, "The French Dispatch," yet, so I'd like to go to the cinema on my next day off and see the characters' arms with my own eyes.

see you!
