"Actor's Watch" focuses on watches worn by actors in movies, television, etc.
This is the 16th installment and we will be looking at the sci-fi action blockbuster "Aliens" directed by James Cameron.
Now it's war!

When we think of watches that appear in science fiction movies, we tend to see prop watches with original designs full of a futuristic feel, or gadget watches from minor brands, but not many famous brand watches. However, it is only natural that modern and vintage watches that evoke the past and present would not fit in a science fiction movie set in the future.
but!
"Aliens" is different.
Because it's a Giugiaro designed watch.
What is Giugiaro Design?
Giorgetto Giugiaro is one of Italy's leading industrial designers.
Even if you don't know his name, you might know him as the designer of the Delorean DMC12 , the car-type time machine that appeared in the movie Back to the Future.

In addition to the DeLorean, Giugiaro is known for creating many other famous cars, including the Isuzu 117 Coupe, Maserati Ghibli, Volkswagen Golf (first generation), Lexus GS (first generation), and Alfa Romeo 159, and is also known as the founder of the car design company Italdesign. He then established Giugiaro Design , named after himself, to carry out industrial design other than automobiles.

Giugiaro has designed many products familiar to Japanese people, such as Nikon's famous camera "F3" and SHOEI's helmet "Z100," but these also include the design of a number of watches in collaboration with Seiko.
This time, I would like to introduce two watches that appeared in the movie "Aliens."
Alien 2
"ALIENS" (1986)
While the first "Alien" was a sci-fi horror film in which an alien invades a spaceship and kills the crew one by one, "Aliens 2" is a spectacular action film in which a fierce battle between a horde of aliens and human forces unfolds. Ripley, the only survivor of the first "Alien" film, returns to the alien habitat with soldiers to exterminate the aliens, and engages in a life-or-death battle with the aliens who have begun to reproduce.

The director was handed over from Ridley Scott of the first film to James Cameron, who directed Terminator (1 & 2) and Titanic, and the sequel is now a masterpiece that is also called "the greatest movie sequel of all time."

Among the cast members, two who wear Giugiaro-designed watches are Sigourney Weaver , who plays the lead role of Ripley, and Lance Henriksen, who plays the medical android Bishop.
Now, let's take a look at what kind of watch it is.
Seiko x Giugiaro "Ripley"
First, the watch on Ripley's wrist.
This is the Seiko Speedmaster "Ref. SSAY068 (7A28-7000)" released in 1983.

The most distinctive feature of this watch is the vertically-positioned chronograph pushers on the 3 o'clock side of the case. This unique shape and pusher placement is to prevent accidental operation while driving and to make it easy to operate even while wearing driving gloves.

This watch is popular among watch enthusiasts overseas and is nicknamed the "SEIKO REPLEY" and "ALIENS WATCH." In 2015, a limited edition reissue model, the Seiko Spirit Giugiaro Design "Ref. SCED035 (gray) / SCED037 (black)," was released, which sold out in a short period of time.

The list price was 35,200 yen (tax included), but it has now become a premium model that is traded for around 70,000 to 150,000 yen on the used market, and if you find one in good condition, you can expect it to increase in price even further.
Seiko x Giugiaro "Bishop"
Next is the watch worn by Bishop, the android played by Lance Henriksen.
This is also a Seiko Giugiaro design , "Ref. SSAY048 (7A28-6000)", released in 1983.

This asymmetrical chronograph is commonly referred to as "offset" due to the shape of the lug that is offset to the 9 o'clock side of the case. The straight, cut-off design of the lug on the 9 o'clock side is characteristic of Giugiaro.

This watch is clearly visible in Alien, in the famous "Knife Game" scene (a test of courage in which the player places their hand on a table and pokes a knife between the fingers), which strongly portrays Bishop's character.

A popular model known among overseas watch enthusiasts as "SEIKO BISHOP," released a limited edition reissue model, "Seiko Spirit Giugiaro Design Ref. SCED003," just like "Ripley" in 2014, which also sold out immediately by reservation only. The list price is 35,200 yen (tax included), but on the second-hand market it is traded for around 50,000 to 100,000 yen.
By the way, this is a reproduction model of the "Bishop" (Ref. SCED023), a favorite of our store staff, in a different color.
summary
In contrast to the elegant and sensual Italian Pininfarina design seen in Ferrari cars, Giugiaro's designs are characterised by a futuristic feel that combines straight lines and is full of functional beauty. This is the main reason why Giugiaro's watches fit seamlessly into science fiction films.
Seiko Giugiaro Design is a modern watch that is also futuristic, making it a watch that literally transcends time .
see you!
