Ed Harris always has a calm and rational face, but he also has a sharp gaze and a wild aura. When he appears in a suspense movie, everyone assumes that "Ed Harris is the culprit" and he is nicknamed "the mastermind actor" because of his presence. He is one of Hollywood's great supporting actors, and he often plays the mastermind of the story.
This time, we will be focusing on the watch worn by Ed Harris in the film.
Abyss
ABYSS (1989)

The nuclear submarine "Montana" mysteriously sank in the Cayman Trench in the Caribbean Sea. The US government asks for rescue cooperation from "Deepcore," an artificial island nearby that was engaged in deep-sea oil drilling, and dispatches Navy special forces. Budd ( Ed Harris ), the head of "Deepcore," cooperates in the search for Montana, despite clashing with the overbearing commander of the special forces and his estranged wife, who designed "Deepcore."
Eventually, Bad and his team reach the sunken Montana and find that there are no survivors. However, a hurricane hits and the cable connecting the Deep Core to the offshore support vessel is damaged. They are unable to return to the surface and lose all means of communication. In this desperate situation, they encounter an unknown entity in the dark depths of the ocean...

Director James Cameron is known for his love of the deep sea, to the point that he once dived solo into the Mariana Trench. In the 1989 marine science fiction film "The Abyss," which was based on his love of the deep sea, Ed Harris , who played a professional deep sea oil driller, wears a Seiko Third Diver (Ref. 6309-7049) .
The C-line case and the crown at the 4 o'clock position. You can tell it's a "third diver" at a glance, even without a close-up, and the individuality of Seiko Divers shines through in this watch. It's a watch worthy of a professional diver's wrist. However, the Cayman Trench, where the story takes place, is 7,684 meters deep, so this watch, and even the Rolex Sea Dweller Deepsea (Ref. 136660 ), which boasts a waterproof performance of 3,900 meters, cannot withstand the water pressure.
Apollo 13
APOLLO 13 (1995)

In 1970, Apollo 13, which was heading for the moon, suffered an oxygen tank explosion. Due to the resulting water and power shortage, it seemed hopeless for Apollo 13 to land on the moon, let alone to cancel the mission and return. The three astronauts, Jim Lovell ( Tom Hanks ), Fred Hayes ( Bill Paxton ), and Jack Swigert ( Kevin Bacon ), found it difficult to maintain their health due to the extreme cold and dehydration.
Meanwhile, Gene Kranz ( Ed Harris ), the chief controller of the Houston control center, listens to the situation from the crew and responds appropriately to the troubles that attack one after another. It seemed that everyone had come together and escaped a fatal crisis. However, it was discovered that the spacecraft was off its orbit to return to Earth. The crew, whose hope of survival was completely lost if they continued like this, took a gamble on correcting the orbit in a primitive way while being unable to use the autopilot or computer.

Although a fatal accident occurred, all the crew members survived thanks to the staff's unity and appropriate response to the trouble, and the Apollo 13 explosion is said to be a "successful failure" and "a model for crisis management." Ed Harris plays Gene Kranz , the real-life controller who never lost his cool and continued to make the "appropriate response" decisions.
The watch he wears in this film is the Seiko 5 Sports (Ref. 6309-6032) . At the time of the accident, Gene Kranz was actually wearing the Seiko 5 Sports (Ref. 6119-8460) , and it seems that a slightly more colorful model with a design that stands out on screen was chosen for the film.

This is the actual Gene Kranz and his beloved Seiko 5. The watch that led Apollo 13 to safety was the famous Omega Speedmaster (Ref. 105.012) that crew member Jack Swigert used to time the 14-second booster burn , but on the ground, it was the Seiko 5 Sports that was the driving force behind the success of the mission.
Phantom / The Night Before War
PHANTOM (2013)

In the midst of the Cold War, in the Soviet Union in 1968, veteran submarine captain Dmitry ( Ed Harris ) is ordered to sail the old submarine "K-129" to test a prototype military device called "Phantom". The "K-129", carrying the device and its developer Bruny ( David Duchovny ), continues its voyage unnoticed by anyone, using "Phantom", which can emit the same sound waves as any ship in the world, to deceive the sonar of enemy ships.
Meanwhile, Demitri and his co-captain Alex ( William Fichtner ) notice that the personal information of Bruny and other people aboard the Phantom has been erased from their boarding documents, and they begin to suspect that they may be part of a dangerous secret organization...

Based on a true story of a mysterious sinking of a Soviet submarine during the Cold War, the film Phantom (2013) is a suspenseful military suspense film with a unique interpretation. In this film, Ed Harris plays a veteran submarine captain who tries to thwart the ambitions of a secret organization, wearing a Ulysse Nardin Marine Chronometer (Ref. 266-67-3/42 ).
This watch originated as a " nautical chronometer " to find one's position in the vast ocean without landmarks. It is a watch suitable for a submarine captain, but unfortunately it does not match the era at all. I think it is a bit strange to wear a watch released in the 2010s in a story set in the 1960s. (lol)
summary
What did you think.
Ed Harris has played the role of the mastermind in many films, so much so that it is said that "When you think of Ed Harris, you think of the mastermind, and when you think of the mastermind, you think of Ed Harris." However, in the films in which he played the mastermind, he did not wear any memorable watches, and the films we have introduced this time are all films in which he played characters other than the mastermind. There is a reason for this.

If Ed Harris were to appear in a movie wearing an expensive watch such as a Rolex, he would appear to be a character with "wealth and power," and the audience would be more likely to suspect him of being the mastermind. On the other hand, if he were to wear an inexpensive, mass-market watch, when his true identity was revealed, the impression that he was a "smart guy who controlled everything behind the scenes" would be less convincing.
In other words, for the actor playing the "mastermind" in a movie, a prop like a watch that vividly expresses the character is also something that gets in the way of the acting and direction. This is just my personal speculation, but I think this is the reason why Ed Harris doesn't wear a memorable watch when playing the mastermind.
The relationship between movies and watches is unique in that the watch expresses the character's true nature and creates the possibility of spoilers. What role will Ed Harris play in his next movie, and what watch will he wear? Or will he not wear one? Take a look at his wrist.
see you!
