Whether you own a luxury watch or not, you have probably wondered at least once, "Which model is popular?" While everyone has their own motivations, such as "I want a popular classic model!" or "I want a model that no one else has!" , it is difficult to know which models are actually popular unless you get real-time information.
So this time, we will be revealing the top 5 Rolex 6-digit models (models released in recent years with 6-digit model numbers) that we have handled at Commit Ginza (hereafter referred to as our store) in the past year! Please enjoy reading this article while imagining the rankings together with us.
5th place: "Datejust 36" "Ref. 126200"
Coming in fifth place is the Datejust 36 "Ref. 126200", which features a 36mm case diameter and a size that fits comfortably on the wrist.
The "Ref.126200" is highly popular for its simple case, wide range of dial designs with a calm impression, and relatively affordable price. There is also the "Ref.126234" with the same case diameter and shape and a fluted bezel, but the two models have different dials, with the former having 8 types and the latter having 16 types (10P diamond, shell dial, aubergine, etc.). Because of the simple design, the different dials give the watch a completely different look, so why not try looking for a design you like?
4th place: "Datejust 41" "Ref.1263 34"
Coming in fourth place is the Datejust 41 "Ref. 126334", which features a 41mm case diameter and a fluted bezel.
This classic dress watch is attractive for its wide range of dial variations and its relatively low price, which is why many people choose it as their first Rolex. Among them, the mint green dial announced in the new model for 2022, the slate Roman dial also known as "Wimbledon", and the dial with a fluted motif are very popular. At authorized dealers, it is difficult to purchase not only popular sports models but also dress watches such as the Datejust and Day Date, so the fact that it has a less premium feel than sports models may also be the reason for its popularity.
3rd Place
"Daytona" "Ref. 116500LN "
Coming in third place is the current model "Ref. 116500LN" released in 2016, which boasts overwhelming resale value and name recognition and is widely regarded as the greatest masterpiece of the Daytona series to date.
The bezel has been changed from stainless steel to Cerachrom, giving it a sharper look and making it an explosively popular model. This model will be discontinued at Watches and Wonders Geneva in 2023, and its successor, the Ref. 126500LN, will be released. I'm sure you remember how much it attracted. It has yet to be seen on the secondary market, but I wonder what the market price of the Ref. 116500LN will be once it starts to circulate! I'm really looking forward to it.
2nd Place
Explorer I "Ref. 214270 "
Coming in second place is the Explorer I "Ref. 214270," the model's first 39mm case diameter model that garnered much attention.
This extremely popular Rolex model, which is also well-known as an entry-level model for luxury watches, was discontinued in 2021 with the announcement of the successor model "Ref. 124270," which returns to a 36mm case. The 3, 6, and 9 indexes are coated with Chromalight luminous paint, but there are some models with a specification called "blackout" that does not have luminous paint, and they are still very popular due to their rarity. In particular, the blackout x mirror buckle model with a mirror finish, which was manufactured from around the summer of 2015 to around 2016, is both a valuable asset and a popular choice, so if you are looking for a 39mm Explorer I, be sure to check it out.
1st Place
"Daytona" "Ref. 116520 "
Taking the honorable first place is the Daytona Reference 116520, which was produced from two generations ago from around 2000 to around 2016.
This model was especially popular for its mirror-finished buckle, which was only available for about a year from the summer of 2015 to 2016. There is also a rare "cream dial" model, in which the white dial has turned ivory over time. Its popularity has been increasing year by year, and good examples are traded at high prices and quickly disappear from the market. This model was sandwiched between the particularly popular "Ref. 16520" and "Ref. 116500LN," and seemed to have stagnated a little, but it has been attracting more attention in recent years, so it is worth keeping an eye on future developments.
While some might have thought that sports models would dominate the top five spots, dress models also made great strides, so the results were perhaps a little different from what we had imagined.
Rolex has made some big moves, such as starting to sell certified pre-owned watches. It will be interesting to see what kind of trends they will show in the future!
