This column discusses mechanical watches from an engineer's perspective. For the 52nd installment, we will be focusing on the following theme:
"Why has Grand Seiko earned recognition overseas?"
Let's delve into this topic.

Until recently, "SEIKO" overseas generally evoked images of:
・Mass-produced quartz watches
・Practical items with good cost-performance
However, "GRAND SEIKO" has now transformed into:
・A brand discussed alongside Swiss luxury watches
・An object of serious consideration for collectors
・A brand that watch connoisseurs eventually gravitate towards
Why has its reputation risen so dramatically? And why is it more highly regarded overseas than in Japan? This time, I'd like to explain the reasons in an easy-to-understand way.
Overwhelming Finishing Quality

To put it simply, the quality of the watch itself is excellent.
Distortion-free cases achieved through Zaratsu polishing. Sharply defined edge lines. The contrast between mirror-finished and hairline-brushed surfaces.
A common sentiment in overseas reviews is, "The finishing quality at this price point is insane." Compared to Swiss watches in the same price range, the superior exterior craftsmanship was what initially led to Grand Seiko's recognition.
This can be attributed to the meticulous nature of the Japanese character.
Dials Expressing Nature

Another reason for Grand Seiko's sudden rise to prominence is its dials. The numerous natural phenomena created by Japan's four seasons, and the various colors they produce. These are not merely patterns, but designs that abstractly represent Japanese nature.
While Swiss watches express "craftsmanship and tradition," Grand Seiko expresses "scenery, time, and seasons." This difference particularly resonated with overseas collectors.
Spring Drive: A "One-of-a-Kind Mechanism"

Spring Drive, synonymous with Grand Seiko, features:
・Mainspring drive, just like a mechanical watch
・Quartz control
・"Glide motion" where the second hand moves smoothly
This movement is unseen in other watch brands. Overseas, it has established itself as "the third type of watch, neither mechanical nor quartz." Such originality is a powerful asset in the luxury market.

Brand "Independence" as a Turning Point

In 2017, Grand Seiko became independent from SEIKO, which was a major turning point. Until then, it had simply been positioned overseas as "a higher-end SEIKO model," but it was then redefined as:
"An independent luxury brand"
The "GS" logo became central, and the branding as a luxury product was instantly refined.

Summary
What did you think?
The reasons why Grand Seiko is highly regarded overseas are clearly due to its strategy of competing with a Japanese sensibility, rather than Swiss tradition, in these areas:
"Exterior quality," "dial design," "movement mechanism," and "brand strategy."
The good qualities of Japan are surprisingly difficult for us Japanese to notice. Therefore, it's understandable that its popularity first took off overseas.
