"Actor's Watch" focuses on watches worn by actors in movies, television, etc.
This is the 41st installment of our series, and following on from last time, we will be bringing you part 3 of the watches favored by film directors .
In [PART.1], we introduced movie directors who use Rolex, and in [PART.2], we introduced other brands, but after digging deeper, we found that there are still many directors who use watches other than Rolex. For that reason, in [PART.3], we will introduce movie directors who use brands other than Rolex .
Directed by Ben Stiller
■ Representative works
Reality Bites (1994)
The Cable Guy (1996)
Zoolander (2001)
Tropic Thunder (2008)
"Night at the Museum" (2006) depicts the chaos that occurs in a mysterious museum where the exhibits come to life at night. Did you know that popular actor Ben Stiller , who played the lead role of the night security guard, is also a film director? In two films in the 1990s, he served as both director and lead actor, and since 2000, he has produced, directed, and starred in all of his directorial works. Since he covers all of his production funds himself, he continues to create edgy black comedies freely without being told what to do by anyone.

Ben Stiller 's favorite watch is the Panerai Luminor 10 Days GMT Ceramica (Ref. PAM00335) . The all-matte black ceramic case is very unique and stylish. It goes perfectly with his signature "blue steel" look in Zoolander , where he played a charismatic fashion model and drew laughs.

■ Highly recommended film: Tropic Thunder (2008)
Actors and crew of the Vietnam War action movie "Tropic Thunder" . The production budget has run out due to a selfish actor, so the desperate director decides to film in the jungles of Southeast Asia, but it turns out to be a real battlefield where a real war is taking place!
This film is full of parodies of war movies such as "Saving Private Ryan" (1998) and "Rambo" (1982), and Ben Stiller both directs and stars in it. He plays a struggling actor who is on the decline and trying to regain his popularity. Robert Downey Jr. , who is well known for his role in "Iron Man" (2008), plays "an actor who has undergone plastic surgery to become black in order to play a black soldier." There's no one like that.

By the way, in this movie, a very popular actor that you all know well appears wearing a watch that seems to be a Panerai Luminor GMT (Ref. PAM00063) . Here is a picture of it! As expected of a big star, the Panerai 44mm case suits his muscular arm very well (we will tell you the identity of this actor at the end).

Directed by Guillermo del Toro
■ Representative works
Hellboy (2004)
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Pacific Rim (2013)
The Shape of Water (2017)
From his directorial debut in 1993, "Chronos," which depicted a mechanical creature created by an alchemist that bestows eternal life, to his latest film , "The Shape of Water," director Guillermo del Toro is full of "monster love" and has consistently made monster films.
Like director James Gunn , who we covered last time, del Toro grew up watching Japanese special effects films such as Ultraman from a young age, and for him, monsters are not just villains. The greatest feature of del Toro's work is that all of his films feature "lovable monsters," including "Hellboy," in which a demon raised by humans fights against the remnants of the Nazis, and "The Shape of Water," the first monster film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, depicting the love that blossoms between an intelligent half-fish man and a human woman.

Del Toro, who loves monsters, has a favorite watch: the Montblanc Meisterstück Sport Chronograph (Ref. 7034) . This large, thick watch is named after Montblanc's Meisterstück luxury fountain pen, which is also known as a fountain pen brand.
Speaking of which, a fountain pen appears as a prop in the gothic horror film Crimson Peak (2015) directed by Del Toro. I can't help but imagine that the director is a fountain pen enthusiast and chose a Montblanc watch for his watch.
■ Recommendation: "Pacific Rim" (2013)
"Pacific Rim" is a giant robot movie that depicts the battle between giant monsters that appear one after another from a wormhole in the ocean trench and attack humans, and the giant humanoid machines "Jaegers" that were created by pooling all human wisdom to defeat the monsters. Director Del Toro, who loves both monsters and robots, has finally made a Hollywood movie out of the "monster vs giant robot" battle that is the specialty of the Japanese special effects world!
The main robot, "Gipsy Danger," whose design is said to have been inspired by the Art Deco design of the Empire State Building, moves with a sense of weight that will bring tears to the eyes of special effects fans. The acting of the main Japanese Jaeger pilot, Mori Mako, played by Kikuchi Rinko , and her childhood role as Mori Mako, played by Ashida Mana, is also superb.

Directed by Sergio Leone
■ Representative works
A Fistful of Dollars (1964)
"A Fistful of Dollars" (1965)
Western (1968)
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Director Sergio Leone is known for the worldwide hit "spaghetti westerns" that starred Clint Eastwood , then a TV drama actor, in the lead role in the 1960s. His unique visual beauty and depictions of violence, which combined masculinity and style, had a huge influence on popular film directors who came after him, such as Quentin Tarantino , John Woo , and Robert Rodriguez . He is truly a pioneer who should be called a "heavyweight" or "major" in the world of action movies.

The watch that Director Leone wore was a Patek Philippe Nautilus . Since he passed away in 1989, it is likely that he wore either the "3700/1" or "3800/1" series . In any case, this is a dignified watch that is worthy of a film director who is called a "master", "great leader" or "veteran". It is something to be admired.
■ Recommended work: "A Fistful of Dollars" (1965)
My favorite film by director Leone is "A Fistful of Dollars." It is the second of Leone's "Dollars Trilogy" starring Eastwood, following " A Fistful of Dollars" (1964), an unauthorized remake of Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" ( 1961). Like the ronin played by Toshiro Mifune in "Yojimbo," Eastwood played the silent but skilled drifter "Nameless." His "Dollars Trilogy" roles gained him worldwide popularity, and he quickly rose to become a top Hollywood star.

The skillful use of close-ups and long shots of the actors' faces, the fast and slow scenes, and the realistic depiction of violence are the true essence of director Leone. The film depicts the friendship and revenge between men who are both friends and rivals, and the stoic professional spirit. Don't miss this masterpiece of the "spaghetti western," a film for men born from the meeting of American westerns and hard-boiled fiction.
summary
What did you think?
Directors Ben Stiller, Guillermo del Toro, and Sergio Leone all wore watches that were appropriate for their films. Whether it is personality that makes you choose a watch, or the watch that highlights your personality, or both, I still don't know, even though I've been a watchmaker for quite some time. But either way, there's no doubt that a watch expresses a person's personality .
Well, the real identity of the man wearing Panerai who appeared in the movie "Tropic Thunder" directed by Ben Stiller is Tom Cruise ! At the end of "Tropic Thunder", Tom Cruise performs a wonderful dance with this makeup and style, so don't miss it!
