When it was released in 1956, it was the world's first wristwatch to display the date and the day of the week in full. It is Rolex's highest-end model, available only in rare materials such as gold and platinum. The bracelet that comes with it is called the "President Bracelet" after it was given to the then US President Eisenhower.

It is equipped with the new "Cal.3255" movement, developed specifically for this model, which has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.

The 40mm case is 1mm smaller than the Day-Date II, released in 2015. The case and bracelet are made of platinum, a high-quality material.
