The El Primero-equipped Daytona "Ref.16520"
The 16520 is a popular model with a wide variety of individualistic features that stir the hearts of collectors, including the 200-tachymeter, 225-tachymeter, porcelain dial, stepped/floating dial, 4-line, inverted-6 dial, Patrizzi, brown eye, and P-series.
The model I am introducing today is an early-production Ref.16520 from around 1989, possessing attractive features on both the bezel and the dial.
First, let me introduce the features unique to this early model!!
○ MK2 Bezel "225-Tachymeter" Bezel
Take a look at the markings between "200" and "300".
While the markings on the MK3 bezel and later only show "240",
the MK2 bezel includes both "225" and "250".
This is a very rare early bezel, commonly known as the "225-tachymeter".
○ MK2 Dial "4-Line"
This is an early dial where "OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED" has been removed from the 5-line text, leaving a 4-line layout.
Like the MK1 dial, this is a very rare dial that is seldom seen on the market.
○ "Inverted 6" Dial
Manufactured up until around the S-series, this early dial is called the "inverted 6" or "flipped 6" because the "6" in the 12-hour totalizer at the 6 o'clock position is printed upside down, making it look like a "9".
As this is a feature found up to the S-series,
the MK1 dial/floating and MK2 dial/4-line versions are always "inverted 6".
○ Single Buckle
The single buckle is also an essential point for early-production items.
The clasp code on this piece is "N4," so it perfectly matches the era!
I often find that these have been replaced in later years, so this is a plus.
○ "Kamaboko" (Fish Cake) Case
The thick "Kamaboko" case is another hallmark of early models!
Can you tell how the early case is much thicker?
There is something really compelling about the rugged impression of the Kamaboko case.
The combination of the 225-tachymeter bezel and the 4-line dial is particularly special, and since they were only produced for a very short period, you rarely get to see them!!
Although there are some signs of use, the overall condition is excellent!!
The bezel condition is a particularly important point for early pieces,
and this one is in wonderful condition with very little signs of polishing!
It has a fantastic look to it!!
The middle case has no signs of thinning and remains very solid!!
The crisp, defined lugs look great!!
The hairline finishing is also beautiful!!
The era-correct bracelet is in wonderful condition with almost no noticeable slack!!
This bracelet is also quite rare!!
The luminous material is all-tritium.
The hands are the original tritium hands.
While there is some minor aging and light scratches on the dial visible under a loupe,
it maintains a relatively clean condition.
