When choosing a mechanical watch, what do you look for?

Many of you would probably say "design," "functionality," or "asset value." Of course, aesthetics and resale value are very important points, but by deepening your knowledge and understanding of the historical background of the brand and model, as well as minor changes throughout the years, you can further appreciate watches and enjoy the selection process. In this column, we will thoroughly analyze and explain mechanical watches to provide as much knowledge as possible to both beginners and advanced enthusiasts, so that it may serve as a reference for your watch selection.

This time, we will focus on the "Ref. 214270," so please read until the end.

Explorer Ref. 214270

Manufactured from 2010 to 2021, the Ref. 214270 is a model that marked a major turning point in the history of the Explorer.
As the first in the series to be enlarged to a 39mm diameter, and with unusual minor changes made during its manufacturing period, there are clear individual differences between the "early model" and "late model."
This time, we will thoroughly explain its appeal, from the robust construction of its 39mm case, to the detailed "blackout" dial that has become legendary, and its refined movement.

Basic Specifications

Ref. 214270 (Stainless Steel)
・Manufacturing Period: 2010-2021
・Case Diameter: 39mm
・Crystal: Sapphire Crystal
・Bezel: Smooth Bezel
・Bracelet: 77200 (Oyster Bracelet)
・Movement: Cal. 3132

① Dial

The dial design of the "Ref. 214270" underwent a major change around 2016.

◯ Early Model (2010-2016) — Commonly known as "Blackout"

The 3, 6, and 9 indices are made of 18KWG (white gold) solid specifications, and are not coated with luminescent paint or white paint.
・It gives a sharp and stylish impression, highlighting the texture of the metal.
・It is reminiscent of the blackout specification seen in the semi-vintage "Ref. 14270."

◯ Late Model (2016-2021) — Full Lume Specification

Chromalight lume was also applied to the 3, 6, and 9 indices.
・All indices glowing significantly improves visibility in the dark.
・This is a professional specification that further pursues practicality as a sports model.

② Hands

In conjunction with the dial change, the length of the hands was also optimized.
・Early model: The hands are slightly shorter for the enlarged 39mm dial. The minute hand, in particular, does not reach the minute markers on the outer edge, creating a unique balance.
・Late model: The hands became thicker and longer overall. With the minute hand now reaching the minute markers, readability has improved.

③ Luminous Material

This model features "Chromalight," a proprietary luminescent material developed and patented by Rolex.
・This luminescent material, introduced in 2008, emits a beautiful blue glow in the dark.
・Compared to conventional Luminova, it boasts approximately twice the duration (up to 8 hours).

④ Case

The series' first 39mm diameter middle case was adopted.
・The material is 904L steel, which boasts excellent corrosion resistance.
・Compared to its predecessor (36mm), the lugs are thicker, evolving into a more robust and powerful form.

⑤ Bracelet

The bracelet has also been updated to a more robust construction to match the larger case.
【77200】
・All parts have been changed to solid material, significantly improving durability and robustness.

⑥ Buckle

It is equipped with the latest features that enhance convenience.
・Easylink: Approximately 5mm of fine adjustment is possible at the buckle. This allows for quick adaptation to changes in wrist circumference due to season or physical condition.
・The robust clasp structure ensures a secure fit.

・For the early model, around the summer of 2015, the clasp part changed from a matte (rough, pear-like texture) finish to a mirror finish. The "blackout with mirror-finished buckle" version is produced for a short period, so its market price is higher.
・The late model features a mirror-finished clasp from beginning to end.

⑦ Movement

"Cal. 3132"
This movement was developed exclusively for the Ref. 214270, based on the 3-hand Caliber 3130.
・Parachrom hairspring: Enhanced resistance to magnetic fields and temperature changes.
・Paraflex shock absorber: Rolex's unique mechanism for increased shock resistance.
・It boasts the highest level of reliability and precision as a practical timepiece.

Summary

The "Ref. 214270" was introduced with an exquisite 39mm size.
Will you choose the "early model (blackout)" with its beautiful metal texture, or the "late model" which pursues visibility and balance?
Furthermore, the final individual late models (around July 2020) came with a new guarantee specification, which commands a higher market price and is chosen as a collector's item.
These rapid specification changes are proof that Rolex constantly strives for perfection. While it is a simple three-hand watch, it is a masterpiece that offers immense enjoyment in choosing and satisfaction in owning.
