Kevin Costner was selected to play the lead role in " The Untouchables " (1987), which depicted the battle between legendary mafia boss Al Capone and the IRS, and this film propelled him to stardom. He also won an Academy Award for " Dances with Wolves " (1990), which he produced, directed, and starred in. It is no exaggeration to say that he is one of the leading filmmakers in Hollywood in the 1990s.

Now that he's gotten older, Kevin Costner often plays important supporting roles in films, even if he isn't the lead actor. In this issue of "Actor's Watch," we'd like to focus on the watches he wears.

" Revenge " (1990) depicts the forbidden romance between a retired military pilot and a married woman, and the tragedy and revenge that ensues from there. Kevin Costner, who plays Jay, a man who risks his life to seek revenge for the woman he loves, wears a Rolex Submariner (Ref. 16610) .

The former superior officer of the one who is the target of revenge, played by the great actor Anthony Quinn, also wears a Rolex Datejust (presumably Reference 16233) . The contrast between the robust Submariner and the elegant Datejust highlights both the characters of the "avengers" and the "targets of revenge."

On October 16, 1962, President Kennedy ( Bruce Greenwood ) and his assistant, O'Donnell ( Kevin Costner ), receive information that the Soviet Union is attempting to deliver nuclear missiles to Cuba. For the sake of American national defense, Cuba's nuclear armament is absolutely essential, but even a slight mistake in response could lead to World War III using nuclear weapons. Will President Kennedy choose a preemptive air strike, a naval blockade, or some other move?

" 13 Days " (2000) is a political drama that depicts the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, when tensions between the US and the Soviet Union rose and the country was on the brink of nuclear war. Kevin Costner, who played the presidential aide Kenneth O'Donnell in this film, is wearing a watch that appears to be a Hamilton Jazzmaster . As an aide to the US President, he is well suited to the role, wearing a Hamilton dress watch, which is as much a symbol of America as a Timex.

We were unable to identify the model, but it appears to be somewhat large for a 1960s watch, so it may be a model that was sold at the time of filming (the late 1990s), rather than during the 1960s, when the story is set.

However, as they hope for a fresh start, strange events begin to occur. They hear noises and voices in the middle of the night, mysterious footprints, and their daughter sneaks out of the house in the middle of the night and comes home covered in mud with no memory of what happened. Eventually, John finds a strange mound near his house and is convinced that it is the source of all the trouble. He tries to destroy it to protect his children, but...

Kevin Costner, who had never appeared in a horror film before, appeared in his first horror film, " The Nest " (2009). In this film, Kevin Costner wears a Panerai watch. We were unable to identify the model, but judging from the image, it appears to be a two-hand Luminor-based watch without a small second hand.

By the way, the original author of this film is mystery writer John Connelly , known for hard-boiled novels such as " All That Lives ." And the protagonist of this film, played by Kevin Costner, is also a novelist named John . Is it possible that the image of the original author John Connelly's extremely bizarre but "profound hard-boiled novels that depict the way men live their lives" is projected onto the Panerai watch that John wears in the film? ... or is that too much of a stretch?

Kevin Costner plays the lead role in an action movie for the first time in a long while, co-starring with Amber Heard, who is currently in the spotlight for her lawsuit against Johnny Depp, in " The Last Stand ." In this film, Kevin Costner wears a Rolex Explorer II (Ref. 1655) . If you look closely, you'll notice that the second hand is a straight hand without a luminous dot (circle). In other words, this Explorer II is likely a rare model from the early production period between 1971 and 1972.

It's common for watch enthusiasts to get excited by the fantasy of a veteran CIA agent still wearing the Explorer II he bought in his younger days as his life's companion.

summary

What did you think?

As expected of Kevin Costner, his watches seem convincing, being practical and reliable without being flashy.

Kevin Costner was a 32-year-old young star when " The Untouchables " was released in 1987, but by the time " The Last Mission " was released in 2014, he was a dignified "late 59-year-old." There is no denying that he has a slightly "vintage feel" to playing an action movie hero, but the years he has accumulated give him a melancholy and mature acting style that was not present in his younger days, adding a flavor to the film.

This is exactly the same logic as how aging gives a watch its vintage charm . It can be said that the aging that occurs over a long period of time on people and objects gives depth of expression and atmosphere to an actor's performance and to a watch in the same way.

Of course, I also admire such " high-quality vintage " seniors, but I ignore the words of an acquaintance who told me that it's impossible because the quality of the base materials is too different.
