Since his debut with " Carrie " in 1974, Stephen King has been a writer who has produced numerous best-sellers. Many of his works have been adapted into films and become huge hits, including " Carrie " (1976), his debut novel, " The Shining " (1980), " Stand by Me " (1986), " The Shawshank Redemption " (1994), " The Mist " (2007), and " IT " (2017), and he continues to create works that live up to his nickname " The King of Horror ."
In this issue of "Actor's Watch," we will be taking a look at watches that have appeared in movies and TV dramas based on Stephen King 's novels.
Incognito Window
SECRET WINDOW (2004)

Mort Rainey ( Johnny Depp ), a best-selling author, is writing his new novel at a villa by the lake. He is in a writing slump due to divorce mediation with his wife. One day, a man calling himself John Shooter ( John Turturro ) appears and accuses him of plagiarizing his novel. The novel is " Secret Window ." It is about a husband who kills and buries his beloved wife in the garden that can be seen from the window. After Shooter appears, disturbing incidents occur around Mort.

In this movie, the novelist Mort Rainey, played by Johnny Depp, wears a watch that looks like a TAG Heuer 6000 (Ref. WH5111 ) . It was released around 1992 and is an avant-garde watch that is typical of TAG Heuer at the time. At first glance, the design looks like a quartz watch, but it was a model that was available in both quartz and mechanical versions.
That said, the TAG Heuer sports watch seems a bit out of place on the wrist of the writer, who is “intelligent but a little sloppy” with his 50s Arnel eyeglass frames and loose knitwear . I'm sure I'm not the only one who wishes he had chosen a watch with a simple leather strap like the Calatrava .
Under the Dome
UNDER THE DOME (2013-2015)

Chester's Mill, Maine is a desolate rural town. Big Jim ( Dean Norris ), who runs a used car dealership, conspires with the police chief and the church to smuggle drugs under the pretext of supporting the town's finances. One day, when a major event is held outside the town and the police and mayor are away, Chester's Mill is covered by an unidentified transparent " dome ," completely cutting it off from the outside world. Inside the " dome ," where neither the mayor nor the police can enter, nor the military can, the darkness in the hearts of the townspeople is revealed.
" Under the Dome " is a popular TV series that depicts "tragedies that occur in a space forcibly separated from everyday life," a theme that Stephen King excels at. It is a science fiction survival horror in which the "secrets" of the characters that are revealed in extreme situations are the key.

In the drama, Big Jim ( Dean Norris ), the used car dealer (with his true identity as a drug dealer) who has risen to the top of the city, which is covered by a mysterious dome and has no police or powerful people, wears a Tissot Couture Chronograph (Ref. T035.617.11.051.00 ) .
Big Jim, a petty villain who desperately tries to cling to power in a small, extraordinary world, is a very "human" character, and even though he is a villain, he is the " underlying protagonist " that viewers can't help but empathize with. The large, imposing yet affordable Tissot watch seems to give a sense of realism to this science fiction-like fiction.
IT: THE END If you see "it", it's the end
IT CHAPTER TWO (2019)

27 years after a series of child disappearances in the small rural town of Derry, Pennywise ( Bill Skarsgård ), a clown-like monster who is said to have survived for billions of years by feeding on frightened children, is about to be resurrected.
The children of the Losers Club survived a battle with Pennywise and vowed to defeat him when he returns 27 years later. As time passed, they left the city, but when Mike (Isaiah Mustafa), one of the remaining members of the Losers Club, contacted them and said, "Pennywise has returned," they gathered in Derry again. The members of the Losers Club, including Bill ( James McAvoy ), whose younger brother was kidnapped by Pennywise as a child, began to gather information in the city of Derry to defeat Pennywise.

The children who survived the battle against Pennywise reunite after 27 years and fight to defeat Pennywise in " IT CHAPTER 2." In this movie, Bill ( James McAvoy ), whose younger brother was kidnapped by Pennywise and who is still haunted by the regret, wears a Rolex Datejust (presumably Ref. 116234) .
"Adult Bill" overcame his childhood stutter and became a successful writer. The reason he chose the simple Datejust is probably because Rolex is a watch that symbolizes " adulthood ."
Stephen King's watch
Since his debut, Stephen King has written numerous best-selling novels, many of which have been adapted into films in Hollywood. His estimated annual income is said to be between 1.5 and 2 billion yen . The watch worn by this "King of Horror," who is also one of the world's wealthiest people, is

The watch is thought to be a Timex Easyreader (Ref. T2N369) . It is simple, highly legible, and a reasonable watch that can be purchased for under 10,000 yen. It seems too cheap for someone like him who earns a lot of money, far beyond that of ordinary people, but perhaps it is precisely because he has no interest in branded goods and maintains an ordinary sensibility that he is able to depict the " horrors lurking in the everyday " that many people can sympathize with and empathize with.
summary
What did you think?
In movies based on Stephen King novels, it seems that the watches chosen are more common and affordable . In "IT CHAPTER 2," he wears a Datejust, but in 2015, when the story is set, Rolex dress watches were not yet that expensive, so it can be said that it fell within the range of "luxury watches that ordinary people can buy."

Stephen King's novels are known for using a lot of proper nouns such as product names and manufacturer names to enhance the " realism of everyday life " and thereby immerse the reader. If a long list of luxury watch brand names and model names were to be added, the sense of reality would be diluted. It is only natural that he would choose a popular watch that everyone owns.
This may not be enough for luxury watch fans, but it could also be said that this is one example of " how to choose the right watch in fiction ."
see you!
